Animals of Grand Teton National ParkAug 7-17, 2007 While in the Tetons we stayed at two of the National Park Campgrounds: Colter Bay and Gros Ventre. Both are dry camping sites and are rarely full. Both are $17 per-night to "dry camp" with central water and dump site of course if you have the "geezer-pass" the rate will be half that. There are several hundred sites in each of the campgrounds. We spent most of our time in Gros Ventre because it is located only 10-miles from Jackson and we love Jackson and all it has to offer.
We have been in Teton National Park for over a week now. We haven't been taking as many pictures as we normally do but we have been here so many times that we are getting sensitized. What I have put together here is a smorgasbord of animal pictures that I thought would be interesting, especially to people who have not visited the Tetons.
Large bull buffalo in Grand Teton National Park
I like this picture Joyce took of a large bull buffalo.
Large bull moose resting in the shade
The people on the bridge were looking for the moose but could not see it. They couldn't see it because it was laying in the shade of this willow and the willow was blocking their view.
Large bull moose in Gros Ventre River near our campground
This is the moose that everyone wants to see when they visit the Tetons. This was a sure enough big boy.
Coyote outside Gros Ventre campground
Joyce spotted this coyote on a side road. He did not seem to mind us watching him.
Mother moose and two babies
This is a mother moose with two babies. These moose were hanging out on the Gros Ventre River near our campground. When driving to and from the campground we would occasionally spot this moose and her babies.
Bison and Grand Tetons at sunset
Buffalo, the Tetons and sunset. This picture was taken on Gros Ventre Road not far from the campground.
Cow elk and momma moose in Gros Ventre River
Here is a mother moose and her two babies. We spotted the moose as she was chasing that cow elk away from her babies. The elk beat a quick retreat. This moose and several others were hanging around the Gros Ventre River near our campground.
Nice buck is in velvet
This nice buck is in velvet.
Mule deer buck
Get a load of the large rack on this mule deer.
Buffalo crossing Gros Ventre Road at sunset
This is one of the buffalo herds ambling toward the Gros Ventre River not far from the Gros Ventre Campground where we are staying.
Large bull moose at Ox Bow Bend
This large bull moose was dining on aquatic plants in Ox Bow Bend late one afternoon.
Buffalo crossing Gros Ventre Road near the campground
One of the things we enjoy most in the Tetons is the wildlife and they have not disappointed us this year. Buffalo seem to be hanging around the area of the campground so we get to see them every time we leave the campground.
Buffalo along Gros Ventre Road near the campground
Color seems to be better in the late afternoon (around 8 PM).
Setting sun Grand Tetons & buffalo
The setting sun, purple mountains and buffalo --- what more can we ask for! Yes! Those are the Tetons.
Buffalo heading down this old glacial moraine pile
This is another group of buffalo heading down this old glacial moraine to the Gros Ventre River. Buffalo are a lot like Congress. They don't generally get in a hurry, they tend to follow a leader, they wander around aimlessly all day then wind up in the same place as the sun begins to set. Large bull buffalo enjoying the sunset
I liked this solitary bull silhouetted against the setting sun.
Moose resting along the Moose Junction to Wilson Road
We spotted this large moose resting beside a stream along the Moose Junction to Wilson Road.
Canada geese in pasture along Wilson Road
Pastures along the Moose Junction to Wilson Road are covered with Canada geese.
Pronghorn antelope in Antelope Flats near Gros Ventre Campground
Antelope were in the sagebrush flats east of the campground but for the most part were always too far away from the road for us to get a good picture.
Large bull buffalo in Gros Ventre Campground
One morning the large bull buffalo ambled through the campground. We heard the noise as tenters scattered. Joyce went outside with the camera and got this picture as he passed the campground checkin office.
