The Gros Ventre River has its humble beginnings high in the Gros Ventre Mountains east of Kelly, Wyoming and ends when it joins the Snake River in Jackson Hole at the southern end of Grand Teton National Park.

Joyce took this picture fairly high in the Gros Ventre Mountains east of Kelly, Wyoming along Gros Ventre Road. When you are visiting Grand Teton National Park you should locate Gros Ventre Road and take a scenic drive east back into the Gros Ventre Mountains along the Gros Ventre River. Be warned that the road will turn to gravel shortly after you pass Slide Lake. Do not be scared because the gravel road is well maintained and our Saturn handles the gravel portions of Gros Ventre Road with ease. Views like the one above await you around every turn in the road.

One of the things you will enjoy on your drive out Gros Ventre Road is the ranches. You are in a wilderness area but there are ranches scattered throughout the area.

The Red Hills Ranch is one of the beautiful ranches that border the Gros Ventre River along Gros Ventre Road. You can not tell it from this picture but the Red Hills Ranch is a beautiful horse ranch.

Click here to read about a young cowboy we met in 2010 that was up here for the summer breaking horses for the ranches owner.

Clear Creek has just joined the Gros Ventre River adding considerable volume to the Gros Ventre River. Clear Creek was anything but clear during this exceptional spring runoff.

Slide Lake on the Gros Ventre River is located about 6-miles upstream from Kelly, Wyoming. Slide Lake was created by one of the largest earth movements ever. The scar left by the Gros Ventre Slide can be seen from US-26 in Grand Teton National Park. The Gros Ventre Slide Scar is easy to spot when traveling south in Grand Teton National Park when you are North of Antelope Flats Road and Moose Junction. When you are heading south toward Jackson just look to the east until you see what looks like an alien carved in the trees.

The Gros Ventre Slide scar will look different depending on the angle with which you are viewing it. The point I am trying to make is that it is easily visible from Grand Teton National Park when you are a few miles north of Moose Junction.

It is worth taking a drive out Gros Ventre Road to the area of Gros Ventre Slide where there is a large pullout where you can explore the slide. There are large kiosk explaining the slide plus an interpretive trail that leads out onto the debris field and dam complete with kiosk explaining what you are seeing. This trail and the pullout are extremely interesting to young folks as well as adults.
