The Firehole River in this picture is flowing through the hard rhyolite of Firehole Canyon just before joining the Gibbon River in Madison Junction to form the Madison River.

Rhyolite is hard igneous rock thus the steep sides that have been cut by the Firehole River.

This is the Firehole River flowing through limestone before entering Firehole Canyon. Note the talus slope on the far side of the Firehole.

The dead trees you see lying on the ground are from the 1988 fires that burned thousands of acres in Yellowstone.

Large boulders, presumably limestone, litter the Firehole River as it flows along Loop Road between the geyser basins and Firehole Canyon.

This area of the river is popular with fishermen.

This is another view of the Firehole River as it flows between the Geyser Basins and Firehole Canyon 10 to 15 miles north of Old Faithful in Yellowstone National Park.

This picture is unique in that you can see old growth forest that was spared in the 1988 fires and the new growth forest that has emerged since the devastating 1988 fires.
