Places Visited: Colorado: Pueblo & Penrose Saturday June 10 through Tuesday June 13 2006: Pueblo, Colorado (On I-25 100-miles north of the New Mexico border). We are in Pueblo West Campground N38° 20.522 W104° 43.097'. Pueblo West Campground is located on US-50 about 5-miles west of I-25. It is totally gravel with huge pull-thru sites (trees are limited); 50-amps, water and sewer, $20 per-night 719-547-9887. This is a campground and equestrian facility.
We spent Saturday June the 10th in Pueblo. The City was having a BBQ cook off and Jazz fest in city park. We had a good time watching and talking with all the BBQ contestants.
In case you are wondering --- we didn't give the "road-kill" product a taste test.
The teams are in it like fishing teams, ball teams, car racing teams etc.,
The BBQ cookers come from near and far, these competitions are big time family affairs.
We enjoyed the signs and banners from each of the contestants.
Each of the teams had cookers, however, this was the neatest cooker.
There were also several good groups providing good music. The crowd was dancing, sitting, paddling boats in the river and generally having a great time.
The El Pueblo History Museum in Pueblo was hosting a Zebulon Pike Exhibition this summer that normally is part of the exhibit at the Colorado Historical Museum in Denver. When it got hot at the Jazz fest we walked over to the museum and took advantage of their air conditioning while learning more about Pike's exploratory journey.
Later in the afternoon Joyce located a restaurant in the small town of Penrose featuring live music so we enjoyed food and music until they shut down at 9PM.
The music consisted of a man and woman on guitars with a little singing. The man was a lead guitar player extraordinaire while his wife played rhythm guitar and did some singing. They were good. The man on the lead guitar was outstanding and he loved what he was doing. He could make that guitar do things it probably wasn't supposed to. What a day! It doesn't get much better. Until next time, remember how good life is. Mike & Joyce Hendrix
