Parks, Louisiana Champion Live Oak

This is one of two champion live oak trees you can see in the small town of Parks, Louisana. It is a champion because of its diameter as measured so many inches above ground level. As you can see this tree has a bulging trunk.

This is an ancient live oak but many of the large spreading limbs have been removed.

This tree is located on the east side of the Bayou Teche bridge in Parks, Louisiana. Look for it about 100-yards north of the intersection on the east side of the Bayou Teche bridge.

This is an ancient live oak but many of the large spreading limbs have been removed.

You can locate this champion live oak on the west side of the Bayou Teche Bridge in a vacant lot on the south side of the street. It is easy to spot.

The St John Cathedrial Oak is one of the largest live oak trees in the United States. It is estimated to be almost 450 years old. It was a large tree in 1800 when the property was donated to the Catholic Church. The age of this tree is based on the average sizes of known age, a tree recorded in 1812 as a surveyor's section corner marker and the growth rate calculated from cores removed from the tree. The diameter of the trunk is eight and a half feet and the circumference is twenty seven feet. It stands 125 feet high with a spread of 210 feet. The large limb extending in a southeasterly direction has been computed by engineering consultants to weigh 72 tons.

Engineers have placed heavy duty steel supports under these huge limbs of the St John Cathedrial Oak.

It is easy to see the two green supports holding up the large limb on this side of the tree. Look on the other side of the trunk and spot two more supports holding up a large limb on that side.

It is nice to know that the Catholic congregation is protecting this magnificent live oak.

In case you are wondering the other language on this sign is French. Lafayette is deep in Cajun country and the French influence in this area is still strong.
