Jolly II Rover Sailboat Key West

The Jolly II Rover is the only square rigged, topsail Schooner sailing out of the Historic Seaport of Key West. It is eighty feet long and able to hold 49 day passengers or 20 overnight passengers.

It is the only sailing schooner with bright red sails and a green hull sailing out of Key West also.

We use the red sails and green hull to identify the Jolly II Rover when she is sailing with the other schooners off Key West.

The song Red Sails in the Sunset was inspired by the "red sails" of Kitty of Coleraine, a yacht the author often saw off the northern coast of Ireland.

Is suspect this view of the Jolly II Rover sailing off Key West is strikingly similar to the view that inspired the song.

Joyce took this picture one evening from Mallory Square in Key West.

This was a beautiful sunset made even more interesting by the Jolly II Rover passing through the setting sun. The bright setting sun visible through the red sails of the Jolly II Rover was truly a breath taking sight.

I can not remember if we were viewing this sunset from Mallory Square or Sunset Pier. Which ever, it was a breath taking event.

Joyce and I do not know the name or capacity of the tall sailing ship with their sails. We see it docked at the Coast Guard Station in Key West but Navy vessels dock along the same pier and the Navy owns the base where the Coast Guard operates at Trumbo Point.

Is it a Navy sailing ship? Is it a Coast Guard sailing ship? Is it used for training or is it something special to entertain high ranking officers. Since it is the military/homeland security anything is possible.

The sailboat with the red sails is the Jolly II Rover that operates out of Key West Bight Marina. The bright red sails of the Jolly II Rover are visible nightly as they cruise off Key West on their sunset sail.

I like this picture of the Jolly II Rover that Joyce took from our campground on Trumbo Point. Joyce framed this picture with the bridge leading from Trumbo Point to the island that our military's special forces use to train for special warfare missions involving water related activities. Specifically the U.S. Army John F. Kennedy Special Warfare Center and School (USAJFKSWCS) is located on the island on the right side of that bridge.

If you want to see some cool pictures of the awesome training by these "Special Warfare" folks click here:

I love this picture that Joyce took from Sunset Pier one night in February of 2012. She captured a beautiful sunset and a flock of skimmers. Skimmers are those birds you see very low to the water.

The sailing schooner Jolly II Rover and one of the Fury fleets catamarans also add character to the picture.

We enjoy watching sunsets from Sunset Pier when in Key West. In addition to the sunsets we listen to the sounds of Robert and Fritz as they entertain guest with sounds from the 50's and 60's. Others prefer to watch the sunset from Mallory Square located about a block away. That option is fine also but at Sunset Pier we get to set on clean stools at a clean table and drink our famous diet cokes.
