Layer upon layer of exposed sedimentary rock is visible on the east side of the Wind River which is flowing through those cottonwood trees.

The gray color leads me to believe this formation is marine mudstone deposited around 80-million years ago since it rides on top of the older Chugwater formation.

The red coloring of this sedimentary rock leads me to believe it is part of the Chugwater formation. The Chugwater formation consists of red sandstone, shale, and siltstone. The bright red color of the Chugwater formation is due to oxidized iron between and on the grains of the rock deposited here 120-million years ago.

While you can not see it there is a creek that flows past that cliff. That creek flows into the Wind River and the wind river is on the right side of the highway and we are looking at the cut on the left side of US-26. This land has uplifted and the creek has cut through the sedimentary layers.

The orange and red sandstone exposed here is colored by ferrous oxide or iron.

The canyon was formed some 60 million years ago during the uplift of the Wind River range west of here. As the sedimentary rocks tilted, the more easily erodible rocks were removed by the action of water, creating this canyon as it is seen today.

This is a spectacular cut made by the Wind River around 60-million years ago during the uplift of the Wind River Range.
