This is an East Indian Almond or Malabar almond tree. This tree, growing in Key West, was planted in 1918, so this picture taken in January of 2011 makes the tree 93 years old. As you can see it is a large tree.

As the almond tree gets older, its crown becomes flattened to form a spreading, vase shape. Powerlines and other obstructions have determined the shape of the crown on this tree so it does not have that "classic" vase shape of a mature East Indian Almond.

The leaves of an East Indian Almond are large like a magnolia leaf or larger, and a glossy dark green and leathery.

They are dry-season deciduous, they drop their leaves during the winter here in Key West. Before falling, they turn pinkish-reddish or yellow-brown.

Note the epiphytes (airplants) clinging to the side of this tree in the form of orchids. On the right side of this picture is a stag horn fern hanging from a chain.

There is also a bromeliad on the side of this East Indian Almond tree located about 18" under the sign. Look for the almost purple sword like leaves on this bromeliad in the bottom left hand corner of the picture.
