Crazy Horse Monument From the back side

July 6 through 13, 2009

Crazy Horse Monument From the back side

The most famous attraction in the Black Hills of South Dakota has to be Mount Rushmore. Close behind Mount Rushmore has to be the Crazy Horse Monument. In this travel log I am going to introduce you to the backside of Crazy Horse.

We are camped near Custer State Park and the town of Custer in the southern part of the Black Hills at Custer's Gulch RV-Park. It is an OK commercial campground just like dozens of others in this area.

Now this picture is special. That is the Crazy Horse monument. It is being created by the family that created Mount Rushmore. The unique thing about this picture is the location where we are taking the picture. Our friends, the Fairchilds, are pulling a jeep behind their palatial Alegro Bus. Les got to talking with another jeep owner in the RV-Park about exciting trails. The other fellow told Les about a jeep trail that would take us to a view point in the National Forest behind Crazy Horse. Naturally, we were up to the challenge, especially since we had the "jeep". Les put it through the paces getting us to this spot. Now you know why this picture is special --- other folks aren't going to have a picture from the "backside" of Crazy horse.

This is the view most people see of Crazy Horse. This view is available for several miles since the highway north out of Custer passes right by the monument.

And another view of Crazy Horse from the highway. This is again the "normal" picture you will see.

This is the Crazy Horse view from the back side. You can thank Les for making this possible.

That is all there is.
