Historic Dewey Bridge across Colorado River

We were moving the motorhome from Moab to Fruita, Colorado so we could visit Colorado National Monument. We took Scenic SR-128 east out of Moab along the Colorado River for 28-miles where we crossed the Colorado River at the site where the Historic Old Dewey Bridge once crossed the Colorado River. Once across the new bridge we climbed out of the river valley onto a plateau connecting up with I-70 and heading east into Fruita.

We stayed at OK RV-Park & Canyonlands Stables 3310 Spanish Valley Drive while staying in Moab: 435-259-1400. OK RV-Park & Canyonlands Stables is a Passport America Campground and we are Passport America members so we get the 1/2 price discount thus only paid $15.50 per-night for full-hookups.

There are multiple commercial campgrounds in Moab. All of them appear to be good or at least adequate------no slums anyway. We decided to stay in OK RV-Park & Canyonlands Stables 3310 Spanish Valley Drive 435-259-1400 because it was a PPA park thus 1/2 price. Even at half price it was $15.50 per-night for FHU with 30/30 amps and cable included. Most RV-Parks in the area are going to be around $25 plus a stiff tax. This park had some shade so we picked it but the nice Spanish Trail RV-Park has nice shade as well and both are within a mile of each other. All of the parks in Moab appear to have gravel interior roads and sites.

We stayed in Monument RV-Park in Fruita, Colorado. It is a nice, even upscale campground. However, I think we will check into how much it might cost to stay in the Colorado River State Park which was located across the street from Monument RV-Park in Fruita and located on the Colorado River.

This is the reconstructed Dewey Bridge built in 1988.

The "old" and historic Dewey Bridge was constructed in 1916. It was the longest suspension bridge in Utah.

Dewey Bridge is located on SR-128 approximately 28 miles northwest of Moab, Utah. Back in 1916 the 500 foot span was the second longest span west of the Mississippi river.

The Dewey Bridge served as the only crossing of the Colorado River for SR-128 until 1988 when a new bridge was built. In 2000 the Dewey Bridge was refurbished by the Grand County Historical Preservation Commission and became part of the Kokopelli bike trail. The bridge was designated a historic structure by the National Register of Historic Places in 1984.

The narrow wooden structure was supported by steel towers which held in place the titanium alloy cables that attached to the deck. The structure had a tendency to sway lightly in the river winds. The deck was a little higher in the middle so a car driving across would have to be careful as drivers from the other side could not see oncoming traffic. Many drivers found themselves partway across the bridge only to have to reverse back down the bridge to let another driver across.

The eight foot wide bridge continued to serve citizens for 72 years until it was closed to traffic.

The Historic Old Dewey Bridge was closed because it burned.

Once we cross over to the north side of the Colorado River we start to climb out of that canyon we had been in since Moab. As you can see the bright red cliffs have given away to younger formations that are more grey in color.

As we start our climb away from the river we came upon this area of volcanic ash. I suppose it is part of the 150-million year old Morrison Formation where of volcanic ash was deposited in the large alkaline lake that covered this area. That would make sense since we are gaining elevation and would naturally be in much younger rock formations than we were seeing downstream.
