Lake Minnewanka near Banff, Alberta
July 8, 2007.
We are staying in the Tunnel
Mountain National Park Campground in Banff, Alberta. Tunnel
Mountain Campground offers no hookups, electricity only and full hookups.
We are in one of the $29.70 electricity only sites. I do not know
what FHU or no hookups cost but they are all in the same area. All
sites are paved.
Mountain goats at Lake Minnewanka near Banff, Alberta

We started our day with a drive from Banff south on Banff Avenue
to Lake Minnewanka about 10 miles southeast of town. It is a beautiful
drive but nothing out of the ordinary until we reach the dam that
created Lake
Minnewanka. Mountain goats were licking salt off the highway
around the dam site and causing a roadblock.

This group of goats were engaged in "licking-activities"
on the side of the road so vehicles could pass.
Million dollar view of Lake Minnewanka from the dam

This is a picture of Lake
Minnewanka from the dam. The road goes across the top of the
dam and vehicles were parked in a line across one side of it. The
vehicles all contained people who were here to scuba dive.
Baby mountain goat at Lake Minnewanka near Banff, Alberta

This cute little goat like all the others was shedding. They can
be such pretty creatures but they sure look scraggly when they are
shedding last years coat.

This is the unruly group that was in the middle of the road blocking
traffic. Someone had not taught them to play nice.
Lake Minnewanka near Banff, Alberta

Lake Minnewanka is a man made lake over 100' deep near the dam. Beneath
these quiet waters lie the remains of an old dam and the foundations
of an old village preserved at the bottom.
Scuba divers enter the lake from the dam and swim down to the old
dam with some even venturing further out to explore an old town site.
Breath taking view of Lake Minnewanka near Banff, Alberta

Here we have the classic (for this area) eastern tilted mountains
with clouds rolling off the top, all reflecting on the placid lake.
The weather is totally different at different elevations.
Cloud formations and fierce winds

The cloud formations around the top of this mountain indicate fierce
winds. It is interesting to watch as these mountains actually create
weather.
Engelmann spruce

We couldn't help but be mesmerized by the tremendous number of cones
on this Engelmann spruce.
Amazing geology surrounding Banff, Alberta

This is a fairly typical scene along the drive from Banff to Lake
Minnewaka.
Glacier carved mountain

A long gone glacier has carved out the top part of this mountain.
