Alabama: Calera

Boondocking at my sister's home in Calera, Alabama

This was just a short trip to spend Thanksgiving with family. My sister lives in Calera, Alabama a small town south of Birmingham on I-65. Their home is located on property that has been in my brother-in-law's family for generations. It is a beautiful piece of property (several hundred acres) with rolling hills of clay, limestone and slate. Their home is situated on a hill overlooking a large meadow and pond. It is a fairy tale setting complete with a house that could compete with the Taj Mahal if you get my drift. It is the perfect place to have a family reunion. Our Mother and all of my siblings were there along with their spouses and children plus our grandchild.

My brother-in-law's family lives in Calera and arrived in time for Thanksgiving dinner. It was especially touching for my sister and brother-in-law since they were hosting both of their families in their entirety. To say we feasted would be an understatement.

Over the holiday weekend we spent time 4-wheeling, walking in the woods, fishing, chasing deer and turkey plus watching a few football games. It just does not get any better than spending quality time with family. All of us will remember this time together.

A note for RV'ers: Alabama rest areas provide dump stations. That is something handy to remember. Diesel fuel as well as gasoline is cheaper in Alabama than Florida. If you are traveling from Alabama into Florida make sure that you top off before entering Florida. Diesel in Calera (I-65 exit 128) was $1.39. Diesel at I-65 exit 69 (Flomaton exit) Alabama 113 was $1.41. That compares with $1.59 in Pensacola.
